Experience a Unique Journey Aboard Japan’s Deer-Inspired Train

Seeing wild animals in the middle of a city doesn’t happen much, but it’s different in the Japanese city of Nara. Here, deer roam the streets freely because they’re considered special and are allowed to. This has made the old capital a cool place to visit for people who want to see animals in a city. There’s even a train that goes through the city, and it’s designed to be like the deer.

The Narashika Train, also known as the “Nara Deer Train,” isn’t like regular trains you see. Its carriages have a floor that looks like green grass, and the seats are designed to look like the tan and spotted coat of deer. Even the handles you usually hold onto have been changed to ones that look like deer. And that’s not all – there are also banners with friendly deer on them hanging every so often, and pictures on the walls and windows too. All these creative things together make the train feel like the peaceful countryside of Nara city.

Even though this unique train hasn’t been around for a very long time – just since December 2022 – it has already gained a lot of excited fans. It travels on the Kintetsu Line between Kintetsu Nara and Kobe Sannomiya stations. But because the train schedule isn’t always fixed, you might not always get a chance to sit on the soft deer seats. But if you get the chance to visit Nara, it’s definitely worth giving it a shot. Who knows, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to hop on the adorable deer train for a ride!

If you visit the Japanese city of Nara, be sure to visit the Narashika Train, or “Nara Deer Train.”
