The director Chad Stahelski wants his upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie adaptation to be shot using the Japanese language and with an all-Japanese casting.
Director Chad Stahelski recently spoke of his plans for the coming Ghost of Tsushima film adaptation and how he hopes to stay true to the game’s roots to the greatest extent possible.
In an interview with Collider, Stahelski said he wanted to convey the story in Japanese, saying, “We’d like to tell it with a sense of the Japanese. It’s the traditional Japanese characteristic of the Mongols invading on Tsushima island. It’s a complete Japanese cast and in Japanese. Sony is in agreement with us on this.” The director, renowned for his involvement in the John Wick franchise, said, “I’ve been going to Japan since I was 16. I’m passionate about Japan, the people there, my passion for the people, and a love for the language. I want to try to communicate not only in my native language but in the language of someone else and shift my cultural perspective to dissect that in a way that still attracts a Western public.”
In the case of a film with subtitles, the director acknowledged that it could be challenging to make a film’s profit in the theater. However, the filmmaker hopes that the Ghost of Tsushima will be an exception. “If you walk into my office located in Manhattan Beach, I have rooms and hallways full of images from the greatest silent films ever made,” he said. “There’s an option to direct the actors and to significantly enhance facial performance. Therefore, if I switch the audio off I’d like you to understand what the story is about regardless of the language.”
Ghost Of Tsushima Movie Has A Lot Of Potential!
Ghost of Tsushima included a style that resembles what was done by Akira Kurosawa, and Kurosawa’s work will also influence Stahelski’s adaptation. “It’s an epic fantasy piece. It’s done with respect towards Akira Kurosawa, probably one of the top five major influencers in my life as in the realm of film,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to challenge the boundaries of technology and human beings with a timeless tale. It’s a typical mythological tale of good and evil, an individual, and seeing him change the world, or how the world transforms his.”
Ghost of Tsushima is a samurai story game that was released back in 2020 and received a Game Of The Year nomination. Stahelski, who has also been a stunt coordinator, spoke about the need to recreate the look and feel of the game. He stated, “I think if we made it right, it could be breathtaking visually. It’s character driven. It’s got the potential for amazing action and great visuals.”
Production has yet to start with Ghost of Tsushima. Stahelski is about to wrap up things with John Wick Chapter 4 as the movie released its first trailer recently. The latest installment is expected to become the longest movie in the series. The sequel to the film of 2019’s Parabellumwill be starring Keanu Reeves in the title role and is set to premiere on March 24, 2023.
The Ghost of Tsushima film doesn’t yet have a release date.
