After 2 years, the trains around Tokyo operated by JR East will continue their all-night services along the nine lines including Yamanote, Keihin Tohoku and many more.
The previous year, JR East and other railroad operators cancelled their all-night train service at midnight on the New Year’s Day, after being asked by both the local and central authorities to help stop the rise in COVID-19 infection.
Train services that run all night will return on nine lines in the Tokyo metropolitan region. Because the coronavirus situation seems to have improved a lot lately, many are likely to attend shrines for prayers at midnight.
The company, however, JR East said is reviewing operating intervals and service routes due the decline in passenger numbers when compared with commuters during the time of pre-pandemic.
In the Kansai region, West Japan Railway Co (JR West) as well as other train operators have announced they would not be operating trains at night on December 31 and Jan 1.
