David Tesinsky’s series “The Man-Machine” follows Japanese business men as they wander the streets, drinking heavily and often sleeping wherever they end up at the end of the night.
Some pass out on the streets, others nap on public transportation. One photo even reveals two suit-clad men sleeping face down in a McDonalds! It’s all part of the corporate routine.
14 hour work days bleed into after-work drinking sessions that often last until 2 am. From there, these overworked businessmen catch sleep anywhere they can, whether in the city or at home, before rising at dawn to return to their offices.
ONLY 5 MORE YEARS AND I WILL GET TO THE HIGHER POSITION IN THIS NEVERENDING PYRAMID.
“I named it after my favorite band’s song: Kraftwerk: “The Man-Machine”,” says Tesinsky. “I found it fitting because the Japanese businessmen are a lot like the robots.”
Tesinsky describes the men’s movements as ghost-like and overly focused on a career upgrade that seems unlikely to manifest itself.
“Only 5 more years and I will get to the higher position in this neverending pyramid,” Tesinsky says, explaining the mindset.
And so, night after night, the ghosts wander the streets, waiting for their next position on the pyramid.
