6,000 Threads of Japanese Washi Tapes Overlap To Form A Rainbow Curtain

Tokyo-based French artist and architect Emmanuelle Moureaux exhibits tape in a way you’ve never seen before. Her most recent vibrant and spectacular installation, designed in 2021, showcased curtains of rainbows created using the world-famous Japanese Masking Tape brand, MT.

The massive piece consisted of 6000 small washi tape strips, each representing 100 distinct shades of colours and featuring an adhesive line parallel to it. Each piece was layered so that they appeared to cross each other and form an expansive field of vivid hues.

“It was fantastic,” Moureaux recalls, “to feel the rainbow moire formed by the 28 kilometres total length overlapping ‘100 hues.'”

The installation of Moureaux was created to commemorate each year’s ” mt factory tour,” which celebrated its 10th-anniversary last year. More than 11,000 visitors visited the MT factory for two weeks between July and August. They were able to experience Moureaux’s art in person.

The utilization of lines and colour is in line with other artists’ works, which are all part of the 100 Colors series. In this ongoing set of artworks, the large-scale works are based on the 100-tone palette, which previously has included hanging figures, flowers, and the Japanese hiragana letter.
