Could This Be Japan’s Greatest Invention Ever?

Let’s face it, there is no greater feeling in the world than waking up in your soft, warm and toasty bed whilst it’s bitterly cold, bleak and downright miserable outside.

The Japanese knew this way back in the 17th century when they designed the ‘kotatsu’ – a way to keep the heat in and the draft out. It consisted of a small hole dug into the foundation of the home, which was filled with burning charcoal with a protect grate placed over the top.

Above it, a table was placed with blankets either side which kept the heat between the table top and the ground itself. It allowed anyone to easily slide under the table, enjoy their meal and have the majority of their body kept warm from the charcoal glow below.
