This Arch Of Mist And Light In Japan Looks Like A Magic Portal

Australian artist James Tapscott was commissioned to make a sit-specific art piece for the Japan Alps Art Festival. Inspired by the river and magic of the forest, Tapscott built an archway that appears to be a portal to another universe.

The installation is called “Arc Zero- Nimbus” and is composed of a ring of mist and light, located at the bridge entrance to the Kanonji Buddhist Temple. The arch serves as a transition from forest too temple, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the historic and spiritual area they enter upon crossing the bridge.

“It is a new concept involving mist and light, located at the entrance to the Kanonji Temple – a very important historical site in the mountain area. Called “Arc Zero – Nimbus,” writes Tapscott.

“A ring of mist encircles a bridge that crosses the little river below, the source of the mist. The source of the river is up in the mountains, where the snow is still melting. The work represents the journey of the water, through all states, down the mountain, and back up again as evaporated mist.”
