Japan Created Unique Kimonos for Every Country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Each and every Olympics reminds us of the interesting and varied countries on our planet. Well, Japan being the host country of the 2020 Summer Olympics wanted to do something special in order to highlight the history and culture of each nation.
In lieu of this back in the year 2017, the Japanese international outreach association called the Imagine Oneworld began the Kimono Project! It is an initiative with the vision of creating a unique kimono for every country in the world.
The whole idea initially was for all of these garments to be displayed in some fashion during the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, this could not be materialized due to the COVID-19 safety restrictions sadly! But the positive outcome was that under difficult situations too, Project Kimono was still finished. You can surely have a look at the results online!
The kimono belonging to each and every country was derived by drawing inspiration from different aspects of the country, its flag colors, geography, architecture, and wildlife, and so on. When you look at the Kimono designed for the USA, you will find features all of the official state flowers, the American bald eagle, motifs of baseball and football, as well as a glimpse into outer space. On the other hand, the Kimono of Greece pays homage to the birthplace of the Olympics with imagery of ancient architecture, olives, acanthus flowers, and flying doves.
