The Japan Skating Federation announced Tuesday that Yuzuru Hanyu, figure skating’s star, will not be able to compete in this month’s world championships due to an ankle injury he sustained at the Beijing Olympics.
The 2-time Olympic Champion tasted the ice two times during this year’s Beijing Olympics. It seemed like more than winning; he wanted to fulfill his dream of landing a quad axel; hence, the champ only finished in fourth place in men’s individuals.
The International Skating Union’s Figure Skating Championships are scheduled to take place from 21st March to 27th in France. And since Hanyu won’t be going, Kao Miura will have his chance at the competition.
The Japanese Skating Federation released a statement explaining that he sprained his right ankle joint at the Beijing Olympics hasn’t healed yet.
Hanyu, 27, chased the third medal at the Games in February. He decided to go for it and got a free skate. It included an attempt at a quadruple-axel — something that no other skater has attempted in competition.
However, the Japanese “Ice Prince” fell twice while trying to make the famously tricky jump.
After the competition, Nathan Chen, a U.S. star, said that he felt like “everything had gone wrong” but that he did his best.
Yuma Kagiyama, a Japanese skater, and Shoma Unio, a Japanese skater, took bronze and silver.
Hanyu has had problems with his right ankle ligaments for many years. A similar incident took place before the 2018 Winter Olympics.
