Japanese Store Chain Don Quijote To Support 100 Ukrainian Families

Pan Pacific International Japan, which owns a significant discount chain, announced on Thursday that it would provide financial support as well as job opportunities to 100 refugees from Ukraine.

Formerly known as Don Quijote Holdings, the company said it was still working out details like where families would be accommodated. It also stated that it would consider cooperating to support refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion with other companies.

Japan has yet to specify how many Ukrainian refugees it will accept. Hirokazu Matsuno, Chief Cabinet Secretary, stated earlier that Japan would prioritize those who are relatives or friends of the 1,900 Ukrainians currently in Japan.

Fumio Kishida, Japan’s Prime Minister, said Wednesday that Japan would support an international effort to take in 700,000.

This pledge is in direct contrast to Japan’s history of refusing to accept refugees, drawing criticism from human rights groups that claim the country has not kept up with rich countries in aiding displaced persons.

According to government data, 47 Japanese citizens were granted refugee status in 2020. The country received nearly 4,000 applications.
