Ryoyu Kobayashi from Japan has won his first Olympic gold medal when he came first in the men’s single normal hill ski jumping event.
The 25-year old scored a colossal opening round of 145.4 to lift himself up to the top of the podium. He posted a score of 129.6 at the end of the round and finished at 275.0 all-time points.
This is the second gold medal for Japan in the history of ski jumping and the first time Japan has won a medal since 1972.
With 270.8 all-time points, Kobayashi was the last ski jumper to make it through the final round, defeating his Austrian adversary Manuel Fettner to the silver medal. Dawid Kubacki of Poland took silver with a score of 265.9.
According to reports & sources, the US didn’t have one ski jumper at the end of the round of the men’s regular hill competition because Casey Larson, Kevin Bickner, Decker Dean, and Patrick Gasienica all finished outside of the top 30 ski jumpers during the final round of qualification for the ski competition.
Larson topped the scoreboard. This placed him in 39th place during the competition. Bickner was 43rd position, Dean was 44th, and Gasienica was 49th among the 50 participants.
It is the only time that the U.S. has not medaled in a competition for ski jumping since 1924.
