A warning for a severe snowfall has been issued in the central region of Tokyo for the first time in four years. This announcement comes from Japan’s Weather Agency.
The warning to the city’s 23 wards was issued when the region was hit with 6 centimeters of snowfall up to 4 p.m. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned against driving on freezing roads and traffic disruptions.
It snowed in the central region of Tokyo city for the first time since March 2020. The last time the agency had issued a notice of snowfall that was this heavy within the 23 wards was back in the January of 2018.
The agency also drew the attention of heavy snowfall in neighboring prefectures of Tokyo and areas along the Pacific coast, where they typically have less snow than those on the Sea of Japan side.
Nippon Airlines and Japan Airlines have all canceled 38 and 50 of their flights to Haneda airport, respectively, due to the harsh conditions resulting in a delay of thousands of passengers.
